It’s the first time a jury has considered claims that Glaxo, the U.K.’s largest drugmaker, knew Paxil caused birth defects and hid the risk to increase profits. Jurors in state court in Philadelphia deliberated about seven hours over two days before finding Glaxo failed to properly warn doctors and pregnant users of Paxil’s risk.
“Perception management” has morphed into a psychological force of such magnitude that best-selling author Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, etc.), was moved to comment before his recent death: “The greatest challenge facing mankind is … distinguishing reality from fantasy, truth from propaganda…. In the information age (or … the disinformation age) … we must daily decide whether the threats we face are real, whether the solutions we are offered will do any good, whether the problems we’re told exist are in fact real.”
Australia’s Daily Telegraph has obtained the adverse reaction reports from the Therapeutic Goods Administration, which showed at least 30 children have had severe psychotic episodes and wanted to kill themselves while on the controversial drugs to treat ADHD.
The documentary film, Big Bucks, Big Pharma: Marketing Disease and Pushing Drugs is reviewed. The author states, “Perhaps a most disturbing trend brought up in the film is the wacky, wild world of ‘things just ain’t right’ disorders. Whether it’s ‘generalized anxiety disorder,’ ‘major depressive disorder,’ ‘panic disorder,’ ‘acute social phobia,’ or finally, the celebrated ‘social anxiety disorder,’ there’s a disorder to fit you and explain away your day-to-day problems.”
Dr. Judy A. Mikovits, the lead author of the paper published online Thursday in the journal Science, which found that 68 of 101 patients with the syndrome, or 67 percent, were infected with an infectious virus, said, “I think this establishes what had always been considered a psychiatric disease as an infectious disease.”
